David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates has revealed his plans for London’s new fashion hub at Chatham Works, Hackney. Adjaye was hired by the Manhattan Loft Corporation to design permenant retail spaces around the existing scheme. Adjaye’s design is for two buildings rising to eight and five stories in height.
Adjaye said, “Our proposals offer a beacon for Hackney Central. The buildings will create a light-filled, compelling environment that captures Hackney’s creative energy, gives local residents a sense of pride in their built environment and provides an exciting new draw for visitors.
The plans will see some over 75,000 sq ft (7,000 sq m) of retail space created for fashion outlets, a cafe, restaurant and design studios.
With Burberry, Aquascutum and Pringle already trading from their retail outlet stores on Chatham Place and Morning Lane, demand for these new retail units in Hackney is expected to be fiercely competitive. Fashion brands will battle it out for a prime spot in what is anticipated to become one of London’s premier shopping destinations.
